The family live their days with a contradictory feeling; on one hand it´s wonderful to be in an eternally hot summer where the rain never falls, a summer which never seems to end, on the other hand there is this growing concern for the downfall, it grows ever bigger day as each hot day passes. It is an overall obscurity that digs deeper and deeper into the children´s and the parents' awareness. In my new film Mercurio Supernatat, I have built up a storyline about a family in which the parents are newly divorced. The four children are forced to live with new adults and new step-siblings. Can the family accept their new environment and the new family constellation. In the film, we see the children struggle to adapt, they exercise role-play, count and dive into the river or lake. Often we see the joy take over and the anxiety disappears for a moment. Meanwhile, the levels of carbon and nitrogen, phosphorus in the atmosphere, in the oceans and in the earth's surface have changed. At the coast, mainly at the estuary, the trees communicate with their mazes of roots that have also become a nursery, shelter and pantry for fish, shellfish and other organisms.

In the game, the ability of children to survive is strong, even growing with new power and direction, despite local breakdowns. The parents try to break away from old patterns and build up a functioning system as a stepfamily. In order to break old habits, parents believe that they must live a nomadic life closer to nature, away from all luxury. The Rhizome family lives in a so-called intermezzo, where the journey has no beginning or end. In the film, we follow the mother's everyday life with the four children, each their own and her partner David in the forests, on the beaches, on the roads and in the old 19th-century courtyard, where the lack of amenities sheds light on questions about human living conditions. Overlaying the filmed scenes, the mother's own diary notes run. And from time to time reports of the fires break in, news about the demonstrations that are politically charged.

The philosopher Gilles Deleuze compares being with a tree. A tree grows until it reaches its end. I have built up a storyline where a family is compared to a tree in a forest. Like Deleuze's tree, it expands outward with the help of more or less underground trunks, so that new tree trunks can grow up from the ground a bit apart. The trunks can be independent trees or parts of the same individual.

“A rhizomatic structure opposes chronology and organization, instead it prefers a nomadic system of growth and dissemination. A rhizome has no beginning and no end; it is always in the middle, between things, the present, the intermezzo. ”You do not know what you become. You are constantly taking new paths. You become what you do and it changes over time.
