JAG FLYDDE FÖRGÄVES

Växjö Konsthall, 2013.9.2 - 10.20

Neo-surrealist is a possibly description of Natalie Sutinen's artistry. The prefix "neo" indicates that Natalie stands for something else than 30's surrealists. The older generation of surrealists set clear rules for the art, while Natalie does not hesitate to throw about conventions and erase borders - the limits of what she allows to inspire in her work and the boundaries between the conscious and the unconscious. Similarly, It´s with the installations in the exhibition. They stand tight without clear boundaries between each other. It is up to the viewer to draw their own dividing lines or just stay precisely there in the gap. Between dream and reality or between the conscious and the unconscious.

Sutinen strives for openness in its work. She gladly avoids explanations of how things are, and maybe, perhaps, looking for somewhere in the middle of the uncertainty. A hovering feeling that makes the viewer almost understand.

Like a stream where impressions, images and thoughts like small leaves and twigs glides past completely silently, leaving a small sensation or feeling.  Sutinen art lingers slightly, just like the late summer fly that follows you a bit in to the fall. The song of the rainy month is not just the fly that sings. Natalie's vanity-like art sings the decays law. In the work ”Hörmånad”, the time is under a glass cup. ”Vision of Nata” is taking place in an old school cabinet. Is the time out or is the time in?

In this exhibition, Slinky, a site-specific work for Växjö Art Hall, is also presented. Slinky is also the name of the toy stair spring which, when dropping it down, for example a staircase, wanders completely by itself. Natalie's work, like the toy, consists of spiral springs. As a comment to the circular era where circle follows circle without beginning and end.

Neo-surrealist is possibly a careful description of Natalie Sutinen's artistry. The prefix, "neo" signals that Natalie stands for something other than 30's surrealists. The older generation of surrealists set clear rules of play for the art, while Natalie is not afraid to reverse conventions and blurring limits - the limits of what she allows to inspire in her work and the boundaries between the conscious and the unconscious. Similarly, it is with the installations in the exhibition. They stand tight without clear boundaries between each other. It is up to the viewer to draw their own dividing lines, or just stay there, just in the gap. Between dream and reality or between the conscious and the unconscious.

A hovering feeling that makes the viewer almost understand. Just like a brook where impressions, pictures and thoughts like small leaves and twigs glide past silently and still, leaving a little sensation or feeling.
